Dr. F. Ishu
Ishiyama started training in Aikido in 1968 in Osaka, Japan and has been teaching Aikido
for over 35 years. He is a student of the late
Bansen Tanaka Shihan, of Osaka Aikikai.
Ishiyama
Sensei moved to Canada in the early 1970's and trained closely with Kanai Shihan and
Kawahara Shihan.
In North
America, he also studied with Shihans Y. Yamada, T.K. Chiba, A. Tohei, Nakazono and
Saito and received occasional instruction from the late Nidai Doshu, Kisshomaru Ueshiba
and the current Sandai Doshu, Moriteru Ueshiba. |

| Ishiyama Sensei has been teaching Aikido
since 1973. In 1974, he was invited to teach Aikido by the then National Coach for Judo
Canada (Nakamura Sensei) and founded Aikido Kensankai at his dojo, Shidokan Academy of
Martial Arts, in Montreal. Ishiyama Sensei also began teaching Aikido at several
dojos and colleges in and around Montreal. In 1979, Ishiyama Sensei was invited by then chief instructor Gary Mols (a
student of Yoshioka Sensei, Hawaii) to head the Victoria Aikikai (located in Victoria,
B.C.) and its affiliated club at the University of Victoria. Ishiyama Sensei moved to
Vancouver, British Columbia in 1986, and founded Vancouver
West Aikikai (formerly known as Point Grey Aikikai) where he is the Chief
Instructor.
F. I. Ishiyama, PhD, is an Associate
Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at the University of
British Columbia. He currently holds the Aikido rank of 7th dan from Aikikai Hombu Dojo
(Aikido World Headquarters) and is one of the senior ranked Aikido instructors in Canada.
Ishiyama Sensei is known for his dynamic technique and impactful teaching style. |
